K-9 Units
The department has five k-9 teams. The K-9 teams specialize in different areas. The department has two dedicated narcotics detection dogs, two explosives detection dogs and one patrol dog.
Rush and Luke, the narcotics detection k-9s are trained to detect the presence of narcotics. Each narcotic K-9 team attend a basic narcotic detector school and are certified through the USPCA. They also conduct regular training and mandatory re-certification.
Jaxx, the multi-purpose patrol k-9, is trained in several different areas. The patrol k-9 team is trained in narcotics detection as well as felony tracking, criminal apprehension and article searches. This k-9 team also attends the basic narcotics detector school followed by another patrol handler’s course and is certified through the USPCA. They conduct frequent training and mandatory re-certification in all areas.
Prime and Ace, the Explosive Detection K-9s are certified in the detection of numerous components for the making of explosives. Each one of the explosive detection k-9 teams attend a basic explosive detection course and are certified through the USPCA. They conduct regular training and mandatory re-certification. Prime is also trained to conduct article searches and Ace is trained in non-aggressive tracking.
